The
Quincy Area Safety Council was founded in 1957 as a non-profit
organization to promote safety in all areas of the community. The council
is headquartered in Quincy, Illinois and promotes activities primarily in Quincy, Adams
County in IL and Marion County in MO. The Safety Council holds monthly
meetings and provides an environment for members to network with other
safety professionals to gain insight into specific safety problems. The purposes of the Council are: (a) To promote safety in all fields of activity including: traffic, occupational, home, school, water, and general public safety. (b) To promote the prevention of accidents in all public places, and to cooperate with all other organizations and agencies in the development of a comprehensive safety program for the area served by the council. (c) To conduct a vigorous program of public education designed to focus attention upon the causes of accidents and how to prevent them. (d) To make available educational and specialized services designed to assist members and other organizations in establishing or maintaining adequate safety programs within their own spheres of activity The Quincy Area Safety Council "Board" is composed of a 10 member Board of Directors, elected from the membership which meets 4 times each year. The Board members are responsible for decisions that directly affect the Council. Since the council is a local organization, the needs of the membership and the community can be quickly addressed. |
The Quincy Area Safety Council is a member of the
National Safety Council
and is certified to teach the "Defensive Driving Course-Attitudinal
Dynamics of Driving" for court referred individuals. This course is also
open to the general public for the purpose of learning to drive more
responsibly. Many area residents have benefited from the class, making
area streets and highways safer. The council currently has a membership of sixty (60) area businesses. These members are from varied backgrounds and include health care workers, governmental units, public sector, large and small businesses, and individuals. Through this diverse membership, the council is able to reach all sectors of the communities we serve, effectively meeting the goals of the Council's Mission Statement. In addition to regular Safety Council meetings, 3 safety related seminars are sponsored each year. The seminars are focused on current safety topics that affect all segments of the membership and the community in general. Company representatives from Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois have attended these seminars. The Quincy Area Safety Council also sponsors an essay or safety poster contest for area 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. The purpose of the contest is to increase safety awareness in the schools and to provide a means for students to become involved with safety related issues at an early age. Awards and recognition are given to the top 12 winners. |
The Council also participates in many outside safety related organizations
with donations of time and financial support. Organizations and programs
that have benefited from the council's involvement are,
Adams County SAFE
KIDS, the 4-H Achievement Day Award, Farm Safety Day, and as a co-sponsor
of Fire Safety Awareness during the month of October. The council has also
co-sponsored safety related presentations for senior citizens for the past
several years.
